Richmond Success!

The weather cleared up right at 11am. The sun came out and so did hungry pie eating people. Great turn out, lots of conversation, yummy pies all around, 14 pies to be exact (4 pecans, an apple, a peach, cherry, lemon chill, key lime, 2 pumpkin cream, and 1 banana cream, a gluten-free cake, and, after eating a slice, a passer-by went and bought us a whole pie! We met lots of people; students, parents, drifters, people getting off work, taking a lunch break, and even a fire engine company. We had someone from WRIR eat a slice and suggest that maybe next Free Pie Day we have it in front of the studio. Who knows, maybe!

ATL Style: The Details for May 16 2PM

Here’s the plan:
Up until May 11th, you’ll be able to sign up here on the website to join any of the teams listed. Based on the number of folks who sign up, we’ll figure out how many locations we can do and get a team captain for each one. At that point there will probably be some re-configuring, so you’ll get an email telling you where to be at 2PM on Saturday. If you can’t get to that spot, no worries– just let us know and we can figure out a better spot for you!

You’ll need to bring:
- 1 pie (at least, you can ALWAYS bring more. get them donated, bake them yourself, buy some from the supermarket!)
- zany pie eating grin
(your captain may have more stuff at that point, like help getting dishes and silverware, but they’ll let you know that week)

If you don’t make the sign up before the 11th, you can still have your own Free Pie event anywhere in the city you’d like. You can go yourself with a single pie to the corner of your street and give it away, or get a group of your friends together.

Make Your Own Pie Stand
If you want to have your own pie stand, our experience shows us you’ll probably need about 10 pies (if you don’t want to be done in 20 minutes) and probably 5 pairs of hands. Make things orange and bring some real plates and silverware to serve it on. We found that if you set up near(ish) to a restaurant and ask real nice-like, they might just let you use their sink to wash things up in.

ATL Style: MAP OF FREE PIE STAND LOCATIONS FOR MAY 16 2PM

It’s almost here, folks, FREE PIE DIRRRTTY style. A hearty welcome to you, no matter how you ended up here (and a hearty thank you to Rogue Apron, BeDo, and the magic of Facebook through which you may have been directed.)

Below you’ll find the map of locations where we’re hoping to get folks giving away some pie. Check out the spots we’ve picked and pick the one closest to you. Then go ahead and put your info and the location you want to blast with pie in the boxes on the lower right. WE WILL NEVER EVER SELL THIS INFORMATION TO ANYONE (EVEN PIRATES). It’s only so that we can see where we’ve got folks leaning so that we can help y’all out in any way AND get you in touch with each other so you can coordinate who’s bringing the pecan and who’s bringing the lemon meringue.

If there’s a place we’ve missed completely, let us know and we’ll add it to the map. (PS, it takes a sec to load)

BKLYN Pie

Beautiful weather brings people of all ages and backgrounds to the most beautiful place New York City has to offer, Prospect Park. On this fine day we set up shop at Grand Army Plaza, right outside the park entrance at approximately 2:30 PM. Before we even had plates to serve on, people were already coming up to us begging for a slice of free pie! This has to go down in Free Pie history that in under 45 minutes we ran out of 13 homemade pies, that’s approximately 104 slices of free pie! Impressive! We had a great time and met many great individuals, including Luther Russel, a wonderful musician who agreed to let us serve pie along side him. The ambience of his music with slices of free pie made for one great afternoon in Brooklyn.

The Beginning

On 3/14/2009 (Pi day) at 1:59 pm, a group of young graphic designers from all over the country, gathered in Belfast Maine and gave away free pie. We shared stories and laughter and united groups of all kinds, all while savoring slices from 35 different pies. Our message was unassuming and honest: Sometimes life is bad; free pie isn’t. The Free Pie Movement is founded on the idea that simple gestures, like giving away free pie, can unite communities and spread joy. Sweet or savory, fruit-filling or custard, graham crust or pastry, pie is a delicious provender enjoyed by all.
